This position is based in Mountain View, CA.

The area: Technical Infrastructure

The role: IP Architect

Google is proud to boast a network that provides service to millions of Internet users around the world. The Network Engineering team is responsible for operating that network reliably and at scale. As a member of the team, you have a direct impact on design and feature enhancements to keep our systems running smoothly. You also ensure that network operations are safe and efficient by monitoring network performance, coordinating planned maintenance, adjusting hardware components and responding to network connectivity issues. Google's complex network generates a constant stream of challenges which require you to continually be innovative with an evolving set of technologies. Keeping the network reliable ensures that our users stay connected with our suite of applications, products and services.

You encourage safe and efficient network operations by leading project teams that maintain and improve network operations. You propose projects that increase network reliability and analyze network technologies that assess implications for Google.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with other team members and groups to develop scalable network designs, solutions and policy recommendations
  • Analyze and Drive key platform decisions and directions, provide guidance to platform and network engineering groups
  • Support Google's internal application groups by identifying and presenting their network-impacting requirements to the network engineering team
  • Support and lead development of Google's growing network infrastructure through published Architecture design docs
  • Take responsibility for the analysis, definition, and continued development of the end-to-end IP Architecture for Google

Minimum qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering (In lieu of degree, 4 years relevant work experience).
  • 7 years experience on a service provider network in engineering, architecture or design roles.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Substantial operational experience with carrier-class routers, switches and optical transport equipment (experience with Cisco and/or Juniper).
  • Experience with ADVA, Infinera, Siemens or other optical platforms.
  • Experience with standards development organizations such as IETF, IEEE and ITU-T.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, GRE, IPSec, POS, VRRP, HSRP, and SNMP protocols.
  • Superior technology skills in packet forwarding architectures, FIB scaling, MPLS, IPoDWDM and large-scale routing.
  • Excellent written and verbal English-language communication skills, with the ability to influence others with network engineering solutions.
