History of NEW LOOK style

The history of the New Look style began in 1947, when the famous couturier Christian Dior presented his debut collection. In fact, the designer did not show anything new: fluffy skirts, rounded lines and a wasp waist were in fashion before. But Dior returned to the catwalk feminine silhouettes, which, more than ever, women of that time needed.

It is a mistake to think that New Look is the name of the debut collection itself. This phrase was introduced by the legendary editor of the American Harper's Bazaar, Carmel Snow, who mentioned the designer's dresses as a completely new look. Then the term New Look appeared, which characterized not only the collection of the English couturier, but also the whole era. This style has influenced many areas of activity - such as architecture, design. Furniture and decor items appeared everywhere in smooth curved lines, very characteristic of Dior.

But everything was not as smooth as it seemed. Many women have not adopted this style. For example, Coco Chanel considered it unacceptable to bring uncomfortable corsets and tight dresses back into fashion. In addition, the post-war period had a strong impact on the country's economy - there was a shortage of fabrics. Not all women could afford clothes made from expensive materials, and Christian Dior used about 40 meters of fabric to create one skirt! The British government was outraged and called the new fashion "golden cage"; (due to cost and inconvenience).

Later, unpleasant rumors began to circulate around Christian Dior. The fact was that the money for the opening of the fashion house was provided by the richest textile entrepreneur of that time, Marcel Boussac. People began to think that the designer created such puffy skirts because it was profitable for Marcel to sell more fabric.

The famous designer was one of those people who live for their favorite work. He was the first to change fashion every six months. Christian closed himself in his office and created new styles and silhouettes. But the stress and stress took their toll. Couturier survived two heart attacks and died at the age of 52.
