WEST VILLAGE, NY — The NYC Pride March will kick off for its 53rd celebration on Sunday from Lower Manhattan.

The march, one of the city's most colorful celebrations attended and viewed by millions, serves as a capstone to the official Pride Month celebrations that have been going on all over the city this month — aside from a few extra events, including a Sunday concert at the Brooklyn Army Terminal starring Christina Aguilera for NYC Pride Island.

Early on a Saturday morning in June, 1969, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rioted outside of the Stonewall Inn after armed police officers raided the popular gay bar.

In the days and weeks that follow, spontaneous demonstrations flourished, with hundreds of people marching in the West Village as a demonstration of gay power.

The riots were quickly viewed as a watershed moment in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights, and every year since, a march has been held on the last Sunday in June to commemorate the transformative moment.
