Blue Glitter Sea Holly is a hardy, easy to grow perennial offering unique blueish blooms with blue green foliage. It takes the heat well, making it an excellent choice for warmer climates. In fact, its blue color tends to intensify the warmer the temperature gets. It blooms in summer and has spike-like flowers arranged around its center. Its foliage is a bluish green color and fans out in thin spikes that look like an intricate snowflake. It is pollinator friendly and attracts loads of butterflies. It is deer, rabbit, and pest resistant and handles both heat and cold well. Blue Glitter Sea Holly is also great in coastal areas, as it can handle salt.
Care
Blue Glitter Sea Holly thrives in full sun and well drained, sandy soil. It does not like to be overwatered. It does well in many different climates but does best in warmer areas. It adapts well to most soils but will need to be watered often when first being established.
Fertilize in early spring to promote growth, and add a heavy layer of mulch to winterize at the end of the growing season. Dig a hole slightly larger than the original container and twice as wide. Be sure to loosen the roots to encourage them to take hold. Blue Glitter Sea Holly should be spaced 18-24 inches apart to allow for root growth. Water as it establishes, but be careful to not overwater. Prune in early spring or late winter to encourage new growth, and deadhead as needed.
Uses in the Landscape
Blue Glitter Sea Holly grows in zones 4-8 and is great for any landscape, especially hot summer gardens. It makes a great unique addition to bouquets and centerpieces. It is an excellent choice as a border or accent plant. If space is an issue, Blue Glitter Sea Holly is a great choice for container gardens and patios. An excellent attractor of pollinators, it is perfect as a focal plant in pollinator gardens. This beautiful perennial offers an unrivaled color that will be a stunning display all season long.
Companion Plants
Denim n’Lace Russian Sage, with its deep violet spikes, is a great compliment to Blue Glitter Sea Holly. It grows in similar conditions and adds some contrast in style with its spiky blue blooms. It is compact, growing up to 2 feet tall and wide and works well as a border or accent plant. Plant the two in mass to create a sea of blue among the landscape.
Silver Feather Maiden Grass offers a contrasting backdrop to mix in the brilliant blue blooms of Blue Glitter Sea Holly. It has silvery green leaves all summer long. A beautiful ornamental grass, it can be used as a groundcover for Blue Glitter Sea Holly or the two can be intertwined along borders and paths.
Stella de Oro Daylily is a beautiful yellow blooming flower that makes a wonderful companion for Blue Glitter Sea Holly. It grows in zones 5-9 and will offer a stark contrast to the deep blue hues of Blue Glitter Sea Holly.
