This Grandma’s Got Gunz.

So we all get ‘old’ it’s simply a fact of life, love it or loathe it, let us all agree that being old is better than it’s alternative. I personally don’t see being ‘old’ as an aliment I must avoid like the plague, I actually plan to rock the shit out of my ‘Golden Years’ so I’m like ‘BRING.IT.ON’. Comes to find out that those who stay fit as they enter their advanced years also tend to stay sane, stay healthy and stay happy. Those who do exercise tend to not only suffer from less physical pains but also from less depression. Need more reasons to keep fit forever? Simply read on…

Since it has been shown that exercise does make people feel better mood wise, this particular plus is even more important for those who are more mature in age. Being active also helps prevent Osteoporosis and Arthritis which I am sure we all know too many older relatives with. Best of all exercising with friends or in a group setting helps one to feel a sense of accomplishment and togetherness. Seniors have no problem lifting weights, walking, playing tennis, swimming, golfing or even riding a bike. There are also many age specific fitness classes for older adults to enjoy, check out your local YMCA or Community Center for their calendar of events.

With people living longer than ever now, it is more important than ever for us to focus on getting fit and healthy and maintaining that fit and healthy lifestyle. Life expectancies are raising all over the world but so are all the diseases that come with a ‘Westernized Diet and Lifestyle’. Now would you rather live out your Golden Years in good health and happiness or in sickness and depression, dependent on toxic pharmaceuticals?

The choice is yours, make the right one 😉

The Ministry of Community Development list public and private programs which offer meals for people 60 years of age and older at senior centers throughout the island. These programs provide social interactions that may be just as beneficial to an elderly person as the meals. For more information, visit: http://www.gov.sg/mcds . One way for seniors to pack a lot of good nutrition into a little meal is to have it in a drink such as milo, horlicks or ovaltine. Add a couple of spoonfuls of milk powder to boost the protein, calcium and calorie content. Have 3-4 wholewheat crackers and a piece of fruit like papaya, mango or banana to round off the mini meal. Adequate hydration is a chronic problem for many seniors. Decreased thirst sensation is common with aging, and some medications affect a body’s ability to regulate fluid balance. Dehydration worsens symptoms of kidney dysfunction and constipation. To combat this problem, seniors are advised to drink at least 8 glasses of fluids a day.
