Update 10/20/22: thanks to everyone who submitted comments about the Holland Lake Lodge expansion. Here’s what’s next for the project →

The Forest Service is proposing a massive expansion of the Holland Lake Lodge in the Flathead National Forest. A gateway to the Bob Marshall Wilderness, the lodge sits on the border of recommended Wilderness along the Swan Range front. Grizzly bears, Canada lynx, and other wildlife depend on this area.

The proposal calls for 32 new buildings covering more than 23,000 square feet. And it would allow the new operator of the lodge – POWDR, a Park City, Utah company that bills itself as “one of the largest ski resort operators in North America” – to keep the lodge open year-round (it’s currently open in summer only).

The Forest Service wants to use “a categorical exclusion” to permit this project. That means the agency would not conduct an environmental review or allow for any more public comment after Oct. 7. Categorical exclusions are for small-scale projects, like sheds, not for massive resort developments such as the one POWDR proposes.

How You Can Help

Join us in asking the Forest Service to conduct a full environmental analysis that takes into account wildlife, water quality, and the nearby wilderness. Your comments must be submitted before Oct. 7.

You can also attend a public meeting – in person or online – regarding the proposal, taking place at Seeley Lake Elementary on Oct. 4, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Those joining online will need to submit questions ahead of time to Shelli Mavor at michele.mavor@usda.gov for consideration as the online version of the meeting will allow for listening only.
