ROCK ON

Lady Gaga Must Have Time Traveled Back to the '70s to Get Her New Haircut

Are you sure it's not 1976?

Is that Lady Gaga or a ‘70s rock icon? I honestly can’t tell. The musician debuted a new hairstyle that makes her look as though she stepped right out of 1976, and knowing Gaga … maybe she did?

Just in time for a performance with the Rolling Stones (talk about ‘70s icons!), Gaga ditched the retro ‘40s and ’50s-inspired styles from her Las Vegas jazz performances in favor of a full-on ‘70s shag with bangs. Her platinum blonde hair has been cut into shaggy layers and styled in messy rocker waves past her shoulders; it looks like her hair has grown quite a bit over the past few months and she was ready for a change-up from the vintage vibes.

The bangs, too, are new, and they're the perfect fusion of easygoing curtain bangs and a classic straight-across style. They've been cut with a light hand so they feel feathery and effortless, but could easily be pushed to the side when she wants to change it up. If you told me this photo was taken in the late ‘70s outside CBGB or Max’s Kansas City in NYC, I'd believe you 100%.

Gaga paired her '70s-esque shag with bold strokes of deep black eyeliner on her top and bottom waterlines for extra definition and smolder, especially onstage, plus pink blush, a hint of highlighter and a satiny pink lip. Her nails, too, were perfectly suited to a rock queen: long, oval shaped and glossy black.

Of course, whenever Gaga drastically changes her look, fans wonder if it's the sign of a new era. Are we moving away from the jazz chanteuse torch singer aesthetic and into a more rock ‘n roll-forward moment, or is she simply having fun with her hair in time for a performance with the Stones? The sequined jumpsuit does point to a more ’70s glam rock feeling, but you never know with Mother Monster.
