Some cars elicit profusely verbose reactions. Others draw knee-jerk reactions from onlookers—simple words that reflect complex thoughts. And once in a while, a car will come along that leaves you speechless, mouth agape, eyes taking in as much as possible. In a nutshell, that's what BMW's 8 Series concept is.

A sign of things to come, the BMW 8 Series concept showcases new developments in the German automaker's design language. For example, for the first time ever, the “kidneys” in BMW's iconic grille meet. They're paired with multiple air intakes and thin slivers of headlamps to create a front that's aggressive and sporty.

The back borrows elements from the i8, and refines them further. Inside, the concept car is as futuristic as you expect. The hexagonal design motifs seen around the exterior are featured extensively in the carbon-fibre and leather accoutred interiors. From the hand-polished aluminium steering wheel to the touchscreen-equipped centre console and Swarovski-encrusted iDrive Controller—technology and luxury play equally important roles here.

The first BMW 8 Series models were created as an evolution of the 6 Series—aimed at enthusiasts for whom the driving experience was the most important feature of a car: The 8 Series concept shows that the automaker hasn't lost sight of the series' raison d'être. BMW is also working on an M model—with larger air intakes, modified brakes, four tailpipes—that promises to be a wilder ride. The BMW 8 Series is slated for release in 2018.
