Fukien Tea Bonsai

from $40.00

(Ehretia microphylla or Carmona retusa)

The Fukien tea tree, or Philippine tea tree, is a tropical evergreen shrub originating from southern China. It grows dense clusters of small, shiny, dark green leaves, and produces tiny white flowers almost year round, plus ornamental berries. The leaves may also have tiny white dots texturing the surface, often mistaken for insect infestations.

In Utah, the Fukien Tea is generally an indoor Bonsai, where it’s easier to maintain the preferred conditions: around 70°F, and moderate humidity. However, you can move it outside during the summer months as long as the nighttime temperature doesn’t drop below 50°F, AND it’s protected from direct sun, AND it’s given supplemental humidity (like a water tray with gravel). Scroll down for more care information.

Available in four sizes, which refers to the size of the pot at it’s widest point.

The Fukien Tea Bonsai requires a lot of natural light so it should be placed next to a window where it gets bright, indirect light. Avoid direct, midday sunlight, which may scorch and quickly dry out your tree. In winter, when natural light is in short supply, a grow lamp for supplemental light is a good idea.

This tree will not tolerate neglect. It is sensitive to both drought and excess wetness. The soil must be kept moderately moist: it should not remain soggy between waterings, nor be permitted to dry out completely.

It handles pruning very well, and regular trimming will make the tree grow dense branch structures. It will also benefit from fertilizer during the spring and summer.

Bonsai are planted in traditional pots; shallow, glazed ceramic, with drainage holes. Pots come in a variety of colors: ivory, blue, green aqua, black, red. You may list color preferences in the “Special Instructions” field after your selection is added to your shopping cart, and we will do our best to accommodate! Colors cannot be guaranteed, however.
