The P1900 Sport was the sole two-seat convertible Volvo has released into the wild, but that fiberglass-bodied, PV444-based drop-top was made in tiny numbers and its inherent flimsiness led to its demise. The Swedish automaker's rally-winning PV drivelines would power that Sport, and later the 1800, but neither of those models were really competitive in the realm of sports cars. This custom-designed and -built two-seater in the Italian barchetta style, made up of steel tubing and a blend of aluminum and steel inner and outer panels, seeks to remedy that, and it's a work of art.

From the seller's description:

The hand-built steel body and interior is in the style of '50s or '60s Lotus sports racers, and Italian sports and racing cars.

The original suspension, rear end, brakes and steering were also Volvo 544, now upgraded to later Volvo P1800.

Steel bracing and aluminum cladding in the style of period road racing cars was fabricated.

The car is powered by a Volvo P1800 B20 2-liter inline-4 engine professionally built by Autosport of Seattle, all stock, with a D-cam high end rebuild with break-in miles only. Fuel system included a new fuel cell, dual, OEM Italian Weber 40 DCOE carburetors and new Volvo Sports intake manifold. The transmission is a factory P1800 four-speed overdrive manual; the overdrive is currently not activated and is bypassed.

Front suspension is “modern,” Volvo 740 including lower control arms, spindles, disc brakes and adjustable, coil over front struts. Four-link rear suspension utilizes a narrowed Volvo P1800 axle assembly, new axles, adjustable coil springs with KYB performance shocks, and rebuilt P1800 disc brakes. Wheels are Volvo 15 inch steel wheels in the style of 1950s Jaguar racers.

The custom exhaust system includes ceramic coated tube headers with full stainless exhaust system-a single piper splits to dual pipes coming out the back. Not installed on the car presently but included with this car is a custom, stainless steel rear bumper. This bumper is included with the car and will require removal of the tail lamps where the bumper mounting frame mount is located.

The interior design was designed similar to 1950s Ferrari sports cars. Our client requested a vintage race car style, which fit the body of the car. The custom built interior by GVM and Jimmy’s Upholstery features custom built leather seats, headrest, quilted door and side panels with side pockets for map sunglasses etc., and rear bulkhead panels with quilted panels carried through into the engine compartment. Wood steering wheel, aluminum center dash, new carpeting with leather in vinyl edging. New fuel-cell and removable, steel access body cover, stainless roll hoop, drivers rear cowl with leather headrest, hidden storage compartment with interior-actuated latch assembly.

Four-point safety belt system with quick release, cam locks. Other detailing and features include custom-made taillamp assemblies with aluminum housings, Austin Healey glass lenses. Custom aluminum windshield frame with GVM-built alloy side supports, Lexan windshield, and Porsche 356 Speedster aero mirror. Steel mesh front grill. A variety of vintage and new Volvo badging and emblems are included but not installed on the car.

This is a stylish, one of a kind, custom sports car that is fun to drive, and would be a special car in an enthusiast’s collection.

RPO Z06 Makes the New-For-’63 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Race Ready and Extremely Valuable

Due to changing external forces, General Motors had a fickle relationship with factory-backed racing in the 1950s and 1960s, and the corporation was ostensibly keeping motorsports at arm’s length when the second-generation Corvette was nearing its debut. This didn’t stop the engineers behind Chevrolet’s sports car from designing and building the specialty parts the new Sting Ray would need to establish dominance in competition. The Regular Production Option code Z06 was selected for 199 coupes, and surviving examples of that limited production run are considered the most coveted and valuable road-legal 1963 Corvettes in existence.

Regardless of what the official GM policy on racing was at the time, the Corvette team had long been actively encouraging motorsports and the glory that brought to this model and Chevrolet as a whole. Privateers who wanted to compete in their 1962 roadsters could specify RPO 687 to gain heavy-duty suspension and braking components, as well as a quicker steering ratio and 37-gallon fuel tank; ticking the RPO 582 box brought a 360-horsepower 327-cu.in. V-8 topped with Rochester mechanical fuel injection. Versions of these special upgrades would have a place in the new-for-’63 Sting Ray as well, for a time similarly bundled under RPO Z06, a.k.a. “Special Performance Equipment.”
