Attack of the undead. Do you know safest city in Florida during zombie apocalypse?

Cheryl McCloud
USA TODAY NETWORK - Florida

There are zombie deer.

There are zombie movies.

There will probably be plenty of zombies knocking on your door on Oct. 31.

But if there were a zombie apocalypse, where would be best place in Florida to survive ... as a non-zombiefied human?

Travel website Wanderu had fun answering that question — along with where do you definitely not want to be — in its best and worst cities in the U.S. to live "if the undead come knocking."

So lock the doors, check over your shoulder and wander with us into some zombie fun.

Jacksonville ranks No. 3 in U.S. as best place to live during zombie outbreak

So what makes Jacksonville the place to be during a zombie attack? Consider these factors listed by Wanderu:

  • Population density: In comparison to other areas, Jacksonville's density isn't bad, and that's a good thing since crowded areas  mean zombies spread faster and easier. That's never a good thing and definitely one of those times that more is not better.
  • Transportation infrastructure: Allows easier escapes from zombie hordes. Might want to make sure you fill up first if you're heading out by car. And be sure to check the bus or train drivers and passengers before hopping on "public" transportation.
  • Access to agricultural land: Ensuring food for long-term survival. That's self explanatory.
  • Medical research labs per capita: In case of a lab leak unintentionally starting an outbreak. Our best advice: make friends with a few scientists to be the first in line for a protective vaccine.
  • Hunting stores per capita: For zombie-fighting weapons. A definite yes.

Where is the best place to live during zombie attack?

You'll have to travel outside of Florida to find the other cities making the top 5 as the best places to be during a zombie attack. Remember, the farther you travel, the more chances you'll have of running into zombies, both literally and figuratively.

No. 1 was Kansas City: "With its strategic location and exceptional transportation infrastructure, this heartland gem proves to be the ultimate sanctuary during a zombie outbreak," according to Wanderu.

Rounding out the rest of the top 5 are:

  1. Oklahoma City
  2. Jacksonville
  3. Tulsa
  4. Fort Worth

What are the worst cities to be in during zombie apocalypse?

No. 1: San Francisco. This city is the last place you want to be. It's packed with people and there are few ways out, Wanderu said.

  • No. 2: Boston
  • No. 3: Long Beach
  • No. 4: New York City
  • No. 5: San Jose

Where do you want to stay away from in Florida if zombies are on the loose?

  • No. 17: Miami
  • Nov. 26: Tampa
