'The New Look'

While you might be familiar with the fashion houses Dior and Chanel, Apple TV+ is telling the stories of the individuals behind the iconic brands—Christian Dior and Coco Chanel—in its new historical drama, The New Look.

"These names have been around us for generations, whether in store windows, magazine ads or walking past their presence in airports all around the world," series creator Todd A. Kessler said in a note. "But the details of what defined them in their personal lives, the forces that shaped them, the specific choices that Dior, Chanel, Cristobal Balenciaga, and Pierre Balmain all made as they faced the darkest hours of the four-year Nazi Occupation of Paris... this is what led to a cultural revolution which brought spirit and life back to a world decimated by the second World War."

Whether you're into fashion, are a history buff, or just need a good new show to watch, here is everything to know about The New Look.

What is The New Look about?

The New Look was inspired by true events. Set during the Nazi occupation of Paris, the historical drama "focuses on the pivotal moment in the twentieth century when the French city led the world back to life through its fashion icon Christian Dior. As Dior rises to prominence with his groundbreaking, iconic imprint of beauty and influence, Chanel’s reign as the world’s most famous fashion designer is put into jeopardy."

The show, which was filmed in the capital of fashion aka Paris, also follows the "surprising stories" of other designers, including Coco Chanel, Pierre Balmain and Cristóbal Balenciaga, and "provides a stunning view into the atelier, designs and clothing created by Christian Dior through collaboration with the House of Dior."

In a personal note, creator and executive producer Kessler said, "Our hope is that we transport you to a time that's not only a period piece but that the series feels like it was made in a previous era and that you haven't yet experienced it anywhere else."

What was Christian Dior's 'New Look'?

The "New Look" was introduced in the first Christian Dior collection on Feb. 12, 1947. Harper’s Bazaar's Carmel Snow dubbed it a "New Look” and wrote "Christian Dior has revolutionized fashion in the same way that the Marne taxis saved France."

According to The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, the "New Look" featured rounded shoulders, a cinched waist and very full skirt, and "celebrated ultra-femininity and opulence in women’s fashion. After years of military and civilian uniforms, sartorial restrictions and shortages, Dior offered not merely a new look but a new outlook."
