The Chinese Privet (Ligustrum sinensis) also called Glossy Privet, is a robust easy-to-care indoor bonsai perfect for beginners. It is native to China and Eastern Asia where it grows as an evergreen shrub up to 30 feet tall and is used as a hedging & landscaping plant. Here in the UK, the Ligustrum sinensis is grown indoors during the winter and sold as an indoor bonsai although other Ligustrum species like our Ligustrum ovalifolium, can be kept outdoors all year round.
With temperatures below 6°C, the Chinese Privet does not do well. Keep your bonsai in a warm room and place it in a location as bright as possible like straight to a southern-facing window, but keep it away from air vents, heaters, and air conditioners. Outdoors, when temperatures are high in mid-summer the tree requires a lot of water, so placing it in a semi-shade spot can be a good choice. Indoors, once you have found the right position for your Ligustrum bonsai turn it around every week or so to make sure that it gets an even amount of light on all sides.
Feed your Chinese Privet bonsai using liquid fertilizer every ten days during growing seasons and once a month in winter. Allow all shoots to grow before pruning living just two or four leaves. Chinese Privet trees respond very well to pruning as almost all hedging plants do, and it can also be defoliated. Damaged or yellowing leaves can be pruned off at any time of the year.
Repot every two to three years in summer using a standard well-draining soil mix. Bear in mind that Ligustrum bonsai need a lot of water, especially in summer so water thoroughly as soon as the soil surface becomes dry, and do not allow the rootball to dry out completely at any time.
The Chinese Privet is also a flowering tree, but you should not prune the new growth until summer if you want the tree to flower because flowers appear at the tips of new shoots. The privet is a vigorous plant that can be styled as a bonsai in many different ways.
