Derbi is a Spanish brand of motorcycles, scooters and recreational quads based in Barcelona. It is part of Piaggio & Co. It was founded in 1922 by Simón Rabas and Singla.
Derbi's beginnings started with a small bicycle workshop in the village of Mollet near Barcelona, founded in 1922 by Simeó Rabas and Singla.
They continued to repair and rent bicycles until May 1944, when Rabasa formed a limited liability company called Bicycletas Rabasa to move into bicycle manufacturing. The venture proved very successful and in 1946 work began on a motorized version. More of a moped than a motorcycle, this first model, the 48cc SRS featured piston rear suspension and a motorcycle-style gas tank and exhaust system. The SRS proved so successful that it caused the company to change direction, and on November 7, 1950, the company changed its name to Nacional Motor SA. Just before that, at the summer fair in Barcelona, the company presented its first real motorcycle, the Derbi 250. An important role in the development of the company is played by sport and the world championships, in which Derbi competed for the first time in 1962. A big contribution to the sporting success of the brand was made by the Spanish rider Ángel Nieto - he won 5 world titles for Derbi; three titles in the 50cc class and two titles in the 125cc class. Today, Derbi is actively involved in the sport and regularly competes in the 125cc world championships. The name Derbi refers to the company's history and is a combination of the Catalan expression Derivats de BIcicletes (bike derivatives).
